Six Things We Can’t Wait To Experience At EGX 2016
The annual ‘Eurogamer Expo’ is pretty much right around the
corner, and of course the team here at GAMR are going to be there sharing with
you the things you really need to know about the games you really can’t wait to
play. But we figured we’d take this opportunity to let you guys know what we
can’t wait to get our hands on when we attend EGX.
Gears Of War 4 (Xbox One & PC)
A decade or so ago, a third person cover based shooter was
released on Xbox 360 which would re-invent the genre, and take it to incredible
heights. The original Gears Of War was a truly “Next gen” game for its time –
combining cutting edge visuals with visceral, enthralling gameplay and a
competitive online community; Gears Of War was the catalyst to one of the
biggest and best gaming series’ to come out of the Xbox 360 era.
Now under development by The Coalition as opposed to Epic Games, Gears Of War 4 sees the series set around 20 years after the events of Gears Of War 3 and also sees long time protagonist Marcus Fenix’s son – JD Fenix take the leading role. After a successful beta and a huge amount of hype building around the game, we can’t wait to see just exactly what Gears 4 is capable of on Xbox One and whether the additions to the gameplay i.e. ever changing scenery due to weather – are to its detriment or not. Start your engines, cogs.

Battlefield 1 (Xbox One, PS4 & PC)
After the biggest beta in EA’s history, it’s pretty fair to
say that Battlefield 1 has the gaming world waiting front and centre for its
release in a months’ time. The reveal of its World War 1 setting seemed to be
to the delight of many, and the incredible visuals and flow of the game –
bought to it by the Frostbite engine was one of the standout factors in the
success of the beta.
With that said, we’re eager to see the depths DICE have gone to with this 1910’s setting, with only two maps included in the beta; there is still a sense that Battlefield 1 has so much more to offer than what we have seen already. While Battlefield has all but mastered its online component over the years, it’s the depth of the campaign which has got us most excited for what’s to come.

Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
Announced at E3 2015, many (including us) were hoping that Guerilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn would make it out in time to be Sony’s big fall game for this year, unfortunately that hasn’t happened. However it’s been a while since we have seen a game look so original and beautiful. A prehistoric/very post-apocalyptic setting with robotic dinosaurs sounds like a landscape that would be impossible to transfer into a coherent and emphatic third person action game; however that is exactly what the studio best known for the Killzone series has done.
There has been very little negative reviews for Horizon from those that have got the chance to get hands on. With most appreciating its originality and nuances in battle – with every fight seeming to require a well thought out plan and plenty of ammunition to get the job done. We can’t wait to throw ourselves into the world of Horizon and, you know, climb some robotic dinosaurs and stuff.

VR is certainly not without its sceptics, and in fairness
the scepticism is justified. Let us not forget that after the success of the
Wii and family focused gaming, Microsoft and Sony managed to convince us that
motion sensor gaming was going to carry us into the next generation, as it
turns out, it didn’t and both the Kinect and Playstation Move seemed doomed
from the start due to a lack of true quality games engineered for the cameras
on both systems.
However VR does come with a sense that things might be different this time around, mainly due to the line-up of VR games within the first few months of its release including: Star Wars, Batman and Resident Evil. Now seriously, who doesn’t want to play Batman in VR? Add to this the fact that Sony claims over 50 games will be released on the platform before the end of the year, and that Sony seem to be genuinely behind VR in full force, and it seems pretty clear that we could very well be looking at a defining moment in the way we absorb games.

FIFA 17 (PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox
360)
Another year and another FIFA release, but FIFA has spent
quite a while atop the best selling sports and particularly football games
every year, especially in the UK. With that being said, FIFA’s closest
competitor ‘Pro Evolution Soccer’ has made big improvements over the last couple
of years, to the point where PES has been winning some critics over, with this
year’s instalment getting some phenomenally strong reviews.
This year, FIFA seems to be going through its biggest changes in the last few years, with the Frostbite engine (also used on Battlefield 1) making its debut in the FIFA series, along with added player intelligence, re-written set-pieces and most interestingly; ‘The Journey’ FIFA’s very own narrative lead career mode, where we take control of Alex Hunter and experience his ride to the top of the footballing world. While the last two or three instalments to the FIFA series have made subtle improvements, the franchise seems to be in the need of a re-boot and we’re curious as to whether 17 can be the answer to this years’ excellent PES.

Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare (Xbox One, PS4 & PC)
Ever since the announcement of Infinite Warfare, Activision
and developers Infinity Ward have been receiving their fair flack of criticism,
with said criticism being routed in the fact that a large percentage of the COD
audience were hoping the game would go back to its World War 2 routes instead
of the futuristic settings which have been a part of the last few instalments
of the series. It seems a huge saving grace for both companies when they
announced that Call Of Duty Modern Warfare would be getting a remaster on
next-gen consoles, with Modern Warfare being almost undoubtedly the best game
in the history of the franchise.
We have a morbid sense of curiosity with Infinite Warfare,
it seems to almost be doomed before the get-go, but despite recent COD games
such as ‘Ghosts’, ‘Advanced Warfare’ and ‘Black Ops 3’ receiving flack from
fans of the franchise, as far as first person shooters go; COD is consistently
a good game. So, with that being said; is Infinite Warfare going to be a good
enough game to turn around the negative feel it has been lumbered with already?
With COD almost certain to sell in high numbers due to the addition of Modern
Warfare Remastered, are people going to even bother playing Infinite Warfare?
We look forward to finding out whether they should.
So there’s our list of the six games we can’t wait to
experience at EuroGamer Expo this weekend. What are you looking forward to
playing? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments and like us on
